Fishing

The lakes and rivers around Fairlie and in the neighbouring areas make excellent fishing for wild rainbow and brown trout.

The fishing season starts around early October through to late April.

Licenses are required for freshwater fishing in New Zealand.  Day and season icenses can be purchased in town at Fairlie Home and Garden on Main Street.

Lakes

Lake Opuha, Lake Tekapo, Lake McGregor and Lake Alexandrina are all popular fishing spots.

Rivers

Local fishing rivers include creeks, freestone rivers and shallow braided rivers.

Guided Fly Fishing

Kevin Payne, an experienced fly-fisherman, operates Back Country Trout and offers guided day trips on local rivers.  Access to many of the backcountry rivers is by 4WD and all fishing equipment can be provided if required.
